Career Exploration: Learn About Yourself

Discover what your interests are and how they relate to the world of work. The Interest Profiler helps you decide what kinds of occupations and jobs you might want to explore based on your interests.

The first step in decision making about work or specific occupations might be as simple as stating what is your dream for work. If you are not sure, then you should complete some different interest inventories to begin to narrow the field.
The O*NET Interest Profiler is a self-assessment, career exploration tool that can help you discover the type of work activities and occupations that you may like and find exciting. It is composed of 60 items describing work activities that represent a wide variety of occupations as well as a broad range of training levels. At the completion, you will receive a profile of your interests that:
  1. provides valuable self-knowledge about how your interests relate to possible vocations,
  2. fosters career awareness,
  3. provides a window to the entire world of work via the 800+ occupations within O*NET OnLine.
The O*NET Interest Profiler’s completion time is approximately 20 minutes. It includes an introductory section, questions about interests, a Job Zone section, a Score Report and a Career List. The instrument uses your Score Report along with your level of preparation to direct you toward occupations that most closely match your interests.

Pay close attention to the (5) tabs on the bottom of the profiler screen.  Work from left to right (Start, Interests, Results, Job Zones, Careers) on the tabs.

After completing the O*NET Interest Profile (Critical to this assignment)
  1. Use the SHARE button in the bottom right corner of the O*NET profiler to copy a link to your interest inventory and email it to Mr. Miller and Your advisor using your school email.
  2. If you would like to discuss your interest inventory results further email Mr. Miller to request an appointment.

***Your results will only be as effective as the seriousness with which you take this inventory.  The more serious you take this the more accurate your results will be.  It is not a quiz.  There are no right and wrong answers.  This is solely for your information.
Best of luck.  I hope you get the results you anticipate. I am always available to discuss your results further, if needed.  I encourage you to share these results with you parent(s) or guardian(s).

Your results will help you determine your next best steps for planning your future whether entering the world of work immediately, considering trade or technical college, or pursuing  a 4 year college degree.
